As i know many of you have been using the RC or have recieved academic lisences i thought a quick discussion should be in order xD at least in terms of how you are finding it with games.

I have considered many times leaving vista behind for XP or Linux but have never brought myself to do so, 7 seems a good time to do just that.

Home Priemium seems to have many of the features you would expect however other options add the XP virtulisation. Have any of you experianced use with it and is it required to run those older programs eg Starcraft as i dont want to shell out another £60 odd pounds for that feature should i not need it.

Also have they sorted out the networking in 7? vista seems slow when it comes to dealing with the network and files in addition the network management seems way too over simplified meaning sooo many sub menus to do something simple (very fustrating when trying to make a quick change).

I have read many of the reviews out there but would still like some input from people i know and who would use the machine for and in a similar way to myself.

The XP virtualization is supposedly really good. You barely know its running, and when a program needs XP compatibility, it opens it inside the virtual machine and it "seamlessly" appears in Windows 7... just as if it were running outside the virtual machine. Not sure how seamless it would be for games though...

Windows Vista is meant to be the Windows ME, and Windows 7 the Windows XP. So it meant to be really good, really fast and really stable. From what I've seen of it at Adams it certainly feels better than Vista, but I haven't had much use of it.

Mine will be coming on Monday probably so I'll be able to get some more idea on it then. Best guy to ask this is Adam but I don't know if he's around that often... he had Windows 7 since Beta as he is official beta tester IIRC.

As for networking... Windows 7 introduces SMB3, so file sharing between Windows 7 / 2008 R2 machines will be phenominally improved. When between XP and Vista though it drops to legacy SMB2 which has been around since 98... lol

Windows 7 also has the newer version of User Access Control. They took all the feedback from UAC in Vista and pretty much improved it based on it all. It's supposed to be less intrusive yet still more secure.

Whoo sounds nice, its just the fact that the xp virtulisation is not avaliable in the home priemum (annoyingly) so i would have to shell out for professional and is that really worth it?

I'd say Professional is the one to go for. Ultimate if you wanna show off lol

Windows XP mode is awesome though lmao. You have a Windows XP window just floating around your Windows 7 desktop... looks really out of place and feels quite cool actually :)

If you look closely you can see the Kapoks server :P
BTL-DNS01 (Has all the DNS. We don't actually use this for work at moment as you can see by the Test label)
EzonateSvr01 (Hosts the web site, FTP, email, etc.)

Having used Windows 7 since pre public beta's and all I can say is its the best Operating System to come out from Microsoft.

I was running the RTM code since mid July (RTM'd on 14th July)

Only difference between Pro and Ultimate is Bitlocker.

And XPM mode is really good, but not intended for gaming.

Gaming on Windows 7 is better than Windows Vista and application compatibility is brilliant and most things should work fine because the kernal is 6.1 (so only classed as a minor upgrade to 6).

Windows 7 works great, have it on my laptop and my brother's pc and myself allready for few months.
Combined with the power of the Intel X25-M postvilla 80GB SDD. My Windows boots in 6 seconds.

Well duh :-)

if we were all rich, none of us would be rich. Therefore we can't all be rich!

by us i ment the members of the kapoks forums, not the world. However point taken, i shall rephrase - not all of us have the required funds for such a project, however we all wish we did!
