a few very basic things about damage: Ok... a marine, for example, deals 6 damage (as can be seen by looking at one)... this damage is modified firstly by the type. it's normal not concussive or explosive so the damage is not affected by the armour type. armour types affect damage types BEFORE the armour rating (the number, 0 originally for a marine but can be upgraded to 3 @ engineering bay). 6 damage is then reduced by the armour rating and the end product is the damage dealt.
e.g. Marine fires at a building... marine does 6 damage, building has heavy armour but this does not effect as marines do 'normal' damage. as buildings have a armour rating of 1, the marine will hit 5 hp from the building.
Concussive damage:
Examples of units that does this damage type: Firebat, Vulture, ghost etc
Characteristics: Damage is reduced by 50% when attacking Medium Armour and 25% when attacking Heavy Armour.
Explaination: Concussive is fine against things like marines, drones, zerglings etc... but never try to pitch vultures against reavers or siege tanks.
Explosive damage:
Examples of units that does this damage type: Arbiter, Siege tank, Goliath air attack etc
Characteristics: Deals 50% damage to Light Armour and 75% damage to Medium Armour.
Explaination: Goliaths are much more effective against carriers and battlecruisers than scourge.
Normal damage:
Examples of units that does this damage type: Marines, Goliath ground attack, Zergling, Zealot
Characteristics: 100% damage to any armour type.
Explaination: Normal damage is not affected by the armour type of a unit. A marine will hit the same initial damage to any target.
