KSL3? Interest and Suggestions

First thing I've posted here on these forums in two months!

There's been a little talk of holding another competition - the third incarnation of the Kapoks StarCraft II League!

Initially, I feel it's a good idea to measure the interest in such a thing. So far, I've have heard some positive sounds coming from DHK, Franky, and myself of course. Are there any other names willing to be thrown into the hat? Please bear in mind that the format of the competition is very much up for discussion so this is just a rather loose measurement at the moment.

On the format itself, do we stick to the league table system we have been using previously? Do we opt for a knockout tournament? Why not do both? Or we could invent some kind of hybrid?

I also hope to look into some of the finer details as well and welcome any related suggestions, just so long as we also have the answers to these big questions as a base to start from

Cheers guys!

Week Seven: And then there were two

Knit's already slim chances of winning the championship, and even second place, were completely dashed after suffering a shock defeat to Gaz.

Franky v Deonilin

Franky's perfect game continued last week as he recorded his tenth victory in all KSL competitions, the first player to do so. But he must be wary of Deon's threat - the only game of his that hasn't finished 2-1 this season was against bottom-of-the-table DragonTank last week.

Home maps: Steppes of War and Bel'Shir Beach

DHK v Knit

Knit's season is beginning to derail, following defeat to Gaz last week. He will once again be tested against Terran opposition as his hopes of finishing third will rest on this particular fixture. DHK has similarly been on and off this season, so this encounter will provide a fascinating watch.

Max v Typh

A battle between two newcomers who have both had fairly difficult seasons thus far. Max has been steadily improving, whilst Typh's interest appears to be gradually fading. This match is the perfect opportunity for one of them to score some major points and nestle amongst the pack of mid-table competitors.

Reviewing some rules

I'm looking to get everyone's opinion on a few things including changes made this Season and changes I plan to make for next Season.

1) Should each player have a 'wildcard' to play to allow them to reschedule a game they've missed?
This would be to address the issue of things popping up at short notice. A player will be able to reschedule one game per season if they've missed a Round week or previously scheduled game for any reason.

While I do believe the rules are the rules and it is pointless having rules without sanctions of some kind, I also realise the importance of having a complete set of games played and the need to be flexible for certain circumstances. I want the league to be as professional as possible and games to be played within the generous time limits already provided, but a wildcard will allow a player to decide to put other commitments before the tournament once during a season. This should be more than enough considering there aren't that many games in a Season currently. The complications to be worked out will be a time limit for the game to be rescheduled and we'd have to trust players not to reschedule to their advantage or another player's advantage.

2) Home/Away map system
You should all be familiar with how the Home/Away system works within the current Season. I just want to know if you think it's an improvement. It'd be nice to know why you chose your specific maps too to see how many people actually put thought into it.

3) Players should be forced to 'Check In' to the forums every Round to state availability and organise games.
This would hopefully overcome issues we've had this season of games not being played/left to the last minute. I've found myself trying to organise a lot of games for other people. I think the forum will be the best choice of venue rather than forcing people to install xfire/msn/sign up to facebook etc (although these are also very useful tools for keeping in contact with other players). It'd just be easier for everyone if the forums were used more for organising games. Using either the thread for the current week or sending a PM would be fine.

DHK v Gaz

The rules state that "players have up until the end of a round (each round lasting one week) to complete their match."

Gaz believes that he did as much as he could to ensure that he didn't fall foul of this particular rule by making himself readily available throughout much of Round Five, including the set date that had been agreed between both participants. Dave, however, went absent unexpectedly and was unable to play.

I really don't think there is any doubt over where the responsibility lies for this matchup being in breach of the above rule. The debate, of which there has already been plenty, is over what is to be done about it.
Gaz has declared that he would like to be awarded the victory by default - this was the consequence assumed by many.
I presume that Dave would much rather prefer to reschedule this fixture instead - understandable, in the interest of a more complete competition.

The lack of official documentation on this is entirely my fault so please direct any displeasures you have at myself and not anybody else! Again, for this, and for the inconvenience that may be caused as a result, I sincerely apologise.

Anyway, if it were in writing, I'd be able to pull it from the rulebook and apply what should have been done straight away. But any decision I make alone on this now would seem as though the rules are being made up as we go along in order to favour someone over another. I can assure you that this isn't the case and nor do I want this to come across in any way.

Therefore, I think it is necessary that the match participants and the rest of the league competitors have their say in this particular instance. Please cast your vote in the poll (above) given the three options that I think are the most suitable.

Thank you.

KSL Week Six: We have a new leader

Franky now leads the way in the league for the first time this season after another fine display against DragonTank, who is still rooted to the bottom of the table without a win. Deonilin squandered yet another 1-0 lead to let Max pass him by in both the match itself and the overall league standings. Two wins out of the last two matches for our highest placed newcomer now moves him up to fifth. Knit bounced back strongly from the previous week's defeat to overpower Typh, who now spends the week off to contemplate his next fixture against Max. Gaz v DHK is still as yet unplayed.

KSL Week Five: First blood!

Emerald has drawn first blood in the race for the title and will be taking a breather this week so the main focus of our attentions turns to the interesting mid-table scuffle that is now unfolding.

Results

Franky 2 - Gaz 0

Max 2 - DragonTank 0

DHK 2 - Typh 0

Emerald 2 - Knit 1

League Table Snapshot

Emerald (4 wins)

Franky (3)

Knit (3)

DHK (2)

Deonilin (1)

Max (1)

Typh (1)

Gaz (1)

DragonTank (0)

Knit turned in a massive performance, greatly improved upon last season's corresponding fixture, to inflict a rare defeat in the first game upon Emerald. The second game was incredibly tight, as Knit threatened to take the match. However, his 1-0 advantage was overturned as Emerald emerged victorious, then taking the third game with ease.
Franky moves up into second place, securing a fairly routine 2-0 win over Gaz, and now has the opportunity to take the lead at the top of the table. Max won his first KSL match against DragonTank to lift himself off the bottom of the table, while DHK sealed fourth place (for the time being) by beating Typh.

The map to be used in each first game of Round Five is TAL'DARIM ALTAR

Franky v DragonTank

Last season's top and bottom players face off in Round Five. DragonTank's continued poor form suggests we are to expect a highly one-sided affair. A 2-0 victory for Franky will send him to the top of the table for the first time this season.

Home maps: Steppes of War and Scrap Station
Last season: Franky 3 - DragonTank 0

Gaz v DHK

DHK currently holds fourth place outright and needs a win here to tighten his grip on it. Gaz also needs a win rather desperately to get his season back on track. Based on previous results, this match looks set to play across all three maps and could go either way. This is the final Terran versus Terran match we are going to see this season.

Home maps: Shakura's Plateau and Xel'Naga Caverns

Max v Deonilin

Yet another mirror matchup, as Deonilin returns to the action in this round. He faces Max, who will be buoyant, and high in confidence, after sealing his first KSL win. An important mid-table battle, with both players eyeing up their second win of the season in order to keep up with those leading the way.

Home maps: Xel'Naga Fortress and Bel'Shir Beach

Knit v Typh

Knit is looking to bounce back from his first defeat of the season and Typh could well be the fodder. A win here will take him back up to joint second in the table. However, the Dutchman's performances have been improving, so we shouldn't expect a straightforward tie in this instance. Defeat for Knit would seriously jeopardise his hopes of retaining third place, while Typh sorely needs to avoid getting rooted near the foot of the table.

KSL Week Four: The race is on!

The race for the title has begun! ...And this week we will see the first major battle in the championship picture as it all unfolds.

Results

Franky 2 - Max 0

Typh 2 - Gaz 0

Emerald 2 - DHK 0

Knit 2 - Deonilin 1

League Table Snapshot

Emerald (3 wins)

Knit (3)

Franky (2)

DHK (1)

Deonilin (1)

Typh (1)

Gaz (1)

DragonTank (0)

Max (0)

Knit fought back from 1-0 down to a laboured victory over Deonilin last week. This allowed Emerald to tighten his grip at the table's summit with a battling 2-0 win against DHK, although the tie could've gone either way at many points. Knit and Emerald, separated only by aggregate score, will lock horns this week in our top-of-the-table clash.
Defending champion, Franky, secured a 2-0 triumph over Max to emerge from the mid-table pack in hot pursuit of the current league leaders. Typh went on to beat Gaz 2-0, his very first win in KSL competition, a result that really spices up the battle for 4th place.

The map to be used in each first game of Round Four is LOST TEMPLE

Gaz v Franky

Franky will look to capitalise on a downturn in Gaz' form and pounce upon the opportunity to steal 2nd place from the loser of Knit versus Emerald. Gaz will be back in the practise room all week prior to this bout in attempt to shake off the rust after some recent time away.

Home maps: Shakura's Plateau and Steppes of War

DragonTank v Max

The two players propping up the bottom of the table will receive their golden opportunity to score some points this week as they collide in this key fixture. Both are still seeking their very first ever win in KSL competition. DragonTank has had the last week off without any fixtures to play; has he used the time wisely to prepare? Max has had a tough start to the season; will he have used the experiences as a useful learning exercise?

Home maps: Scrap Station and Xel'Naga Fortress

DHK v Typh

The second of the two Terran versus Protoss encounters in this round of fixtures brings Typh and DHK together to see who will lead the race for 4th position as we head into the season's mid-way point. Typh managed to overcome Terran opposition in the previous round to secure his maiden KSL victory, and will be higher in confidence with legitimate hopes for more of the same. DHK played a very impressive game last week against Emerald. Another high calibre performance could see him steal a win this time around.

Home maps: Xel'Naga Caverns and Backwater Gulch

Knit v Emerald
This is the game everyone will not want to miss this week as two unbeaten records go head-to-head. Knit has been looking less clinical this season while Emerald seems unstoppable. The tie will, however, be pitting last season's 2nd versus 3rd, possibly a title-winning moment in the making. Expect a very closely-fought matchup, regardless of what the final scoreline may suggest.

KSL Week Three

Results

Emerald (2 wins)

Knit (2)

DHK (1)

Franky (1)

Deonilin (1)

Gaz (1)

DragonTank (0)

Max (0)

TyphoonR (0)

Knit climbed up to 2nd place in the table, grabbing a tricky 2-1 victory over DragonTank, who also moves up to 7th after surprisingly taking victory in the second game of the matchup, his first in ten attempts.

The map to be used in each first game of Round Three is DESERT OASIS

Franky v Max

Master vs Apprentice this week as Franky faces Max for the first time in Kapoks competitive play. Franky might have taught Max all he knew but it wasn't enough to stop Knit in the previous round. Will Max know his trainer well enough to be able to beat him? or will Franky's solid builds continue to shine through?

Home maps: Steppes of War and Xel'Naga Fortress

Typh v Gaz

Two newcomers face each other for the first time in the Kapoks StarLeague. Gaz has the better record so far, with one win to his name already against his brother. Although Typh has suffered two defeats in his opening two games, most would agree that he has had the harder games, facing the top two seeded players from Season 1. Both of these players have been beaten by, and trained by, Emerald. Emerald has assured us that he will leave these two to their own devices for this game though.

Home maps: Backwater Gulch and Shakuras Plateau

Emerald v DHK

Emerald has won four games in succession to sit at the top of the league table. DHK inflicted a rare defeat on him during last season's encounter, on the map he has now chosen as his Home, and can therefore provide the first real challenge to his 100% record.

Home maps: Crossfire and Xel'Naga Caverns
Last season: Emerald 2 - 1 DHK

Knit v Deonilin

Knit showed a very shaky and naive display in the last round. His charge to keep up with Emerald in the league standings will require a more polished performance against Deonilin this time around. Last season Deonilin almost beat Knit in their second game, has KSL's "Most Improved" player come far enough to change the outcome for this match?

KSL Week Two: We Are Under Way!

The new season kicked off a week ago with a massive bang! No less than six bouts were contested, with a couple of surprising results and some incredibly entertaining matchups.

Results

Emerald 2 - TyphoonR 0

Knit 2 - Max 0

Deonilin 1 - Gaz 2

DHK 2 - DragonTank 0

Gaz 0 - Emerald 2

DHK 1 - Deonilin 2

League Table Snapshot

Emerald (2 wins)

DHK (1)

Deonilin (1)

Knit (1)

Gaz (1)

Max (0)

Franky (0)

DragonTank (0)

TyphoonR (0)

Emerald has set the pace early, dispatching Gaz and then TyphoonR with two seemingly routine victories. The mid-table battle has already begun to unfold, with Deonilin involved in two very thrilling encounters. A closely fought 2-1 defeat to newcomer Gaz was followed by victory and more back-and-forth exchanges with DHK. Knit returned to winning ways with a win over the final new entrant, Max, who will be sitting out during week two to take stock and ponder another tricky tie next week against Franky.

This week there will be just two matches taking place.

The map to be used in each first game of Round Two is TAL'DARIM ALTAR

TyphoonR v Franky

After a very hard first match, things aren't expected to improve for Typh as the reigning champion joins the action to kick off the defense of his title. A good showing against Franky, however, in the round's only Protoss v Protoss encounter, will bolster his hopes of lifting off the bottom of the table sooner rather than later.

Home maps: Backwater Gulch and Steppes of War

DragonTank v Knit

DragonTank's lack of practise was evident in his 2-0 defeat to DHK last time around. A tougher opponent in Knit, who has already beaten Protoss opposition this season, will be looking to take further advantage of this in attempt to keep up with the early pace-setters.

KSL Week One: Let Battle Commence!

This is it folks! The second season is now upon us, battle is set to commence! This week we shall see all four fixtures for Round One as well as hopefully a couple of other fixtures from Round Two due to the expected inactivity of Gaz and Deonilin from next week.

The map to be used in each first game of Round One is LOST TEMPLE

Emerald v Typh

We welcome Typh to the KSL with last season's runner-up! Can he make a good impression, or will Emerald be picking up from where he left off in his quest to top the table this time around?

Home maps: Crossfire and Backwater Gulch

Knit v Max

Similarly, Max could well be receiving a baptism of fire here in the first round. Knit, who came third last season and is the only Zerg player in the competition, will be looking to turn around some poor recent form.

Home maps: Antiga Shipyard and Xel'Naga Fortress

Deonilin v Gaz

The second of three Protoss v Terran bouts to be contested in this round. Deonilin, chosen by many as the biggest improver in last season's competition, will be up against his brother Gaz, who himself is relatively new to StarCraft II. This is, however, expected to be a closely fought battle.

Home maps: Bel'Shir Beach and Shakuras Plateau

DHK v DragonTank

The other Terran v Protoss matchup of this round will see last season's bottom two players battling it out. DHK will be fighting hard to prove he should be a top-half contender on merit. An out-of-practise DragonTank would seem a good place to start, but prepare for the unexpected!
